Microwave energy waves are reflected back from a target to the radar. waves are reflected by a target at a distance, just like traditional radar. Moving targets return echoes whose frequencies are shifted up or down relative to what was originally transmitted. For incoming targets, the frequency increases because the leading edge of the returning echoes is received more often as the target gets closer. For outbound targets, the frequency falls because the return echoes are spaced further apart as the distance increases. Doppler radars are designed to detect these small changes in wave frequency, and use them to classify moving radar targets.

DOPPLER TARGET TREATMENT: A Doppler radar is specially tuned to detect frequency changes in the radar echo returned by fixed and moving targets. The Quantum 2 then assigns unique colour codes to moving targets to indicate whether they are approaching or moving away.
Inbound targets are displayed in red.
Outbound targets are displayed in green.

Targets that are colour coded simplify the detection of moving traffic compared to other fixed targets, such as land, navigational aids or stationary/anchored vessels.

The Quantum 2 also features fully automatic target acquisition and tracking. Set up custom safety or alert zones and be notified of new radar contacts entering the zone. The Quantum 2 can automatically start tracking these contacts, calculating their trajectory, speed, closest point of approach, etc. The Quantum 2 also features Raymarine's new True Trails target history display. True Trails features allow you to see the 'wake' history of each moving contact. This additional information makes it even easier to interpret the movement of other vessels and make informed manoeuvring decisions safely.
